Play Mas! a Carnival ABC: A Carnival ABC
Published in Hardcover by Tundra Books (April, 2000)
Authors: Dirk McLean and Ras Stone
Average review score:

Delightful, informative introduction to Carnival traditions.
Play Mas'! A Carnival ABC is a delightful and informative introduction to the tradition of Carnival. Vibrant pictures by Ras Stone showcase Dirk McLean's evocative language capturing the spirit of this event, held all over the world at different times of the year. Carnival is rooted in the French tradition of the Masquerade (Mas'), but has been transformed by African, East Indian, and Spanish influences showcased is in such events as Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Caribana in Toronto. Play Mas'! A Carnival ABC introduces the rich language, traditions, food, costumes, music, and festival events in an alliterative text. To add to a young reader's enjoyment, there is a hidden letter embedded in each brightly color, boldly designed scene.

Great Book for Parents
This book has dozens of lessons - disguised as games - that help develop a child's mind, mobile skills and coordination.

Plutocracy and Politics in New York City (Urban Policy Challenges)
Published in Paperback by Westview Press (January, 1998)
Authors: Gabriel Abraham Almond and Clarence Stone
Average review score:

Uninformed review
First of all, being as this is a book of a historically academic nature, I want to note that I am not an academic of history. While being a student of computer science, I bought this book to read for information for a paper I was writing.

The topic was the upper class society of New York during the time period of The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. I, not a great lover of history, found the book wonderfully written to not only provide me with the facts and statistics that I knew I would find in a book written with a research theme in mind, but also to entertain me with clear, logical writing that could be understood on any level.

Just to sum up the content, the book explains the historical background of the political and social scene prior to the 19th century and then launches into a detailed and analyzed text on not only the upper class and how it played a role in the political structure of a newly forming New York City, but also an in-depth dissection on the social trends and habits of the upper class outside the political scene.

While the topic may be quite specific and this book is truly only recommended to those unique history buffs of 19th century New York City or a student writing on a relevant topic, for anyone needing information on upper class New York or the old political scene, I highly recommend the book.

Polite Revolutionary: Lessons from an Uncivil Servant
Published in Paperback by Turkish Standards Institution (19 September, 2001)
Author: Bob Stone
Average review score:

energizer
This is an exhilarating book, full of spirit and spark. It vividly and passionately describes the author's groundbreaking, bureaucracy-busting work as head of the National Performance Review. Ignited by Tom Peter's In Search of Excellence,
Stone became Al Gore's right hand in working to reinvent government. His book is filled with wonderful stories of revolutionaries from every rank and level. It contains many great tidbits of advice and wisdom. The author used to refer to himself as Energizer in Chief. His book is just that: an energizer. It breathes the soul of civic revolution. It is full of fun as well, an easy read. Stone is totally devoted to action that breaks down ridiculous and often absurd barriers from getting the job done right. But the book is full of humanity as well, as when Stone decides to retire so he can live closer to his young grandchildren. If you want to touch clear, decisive, humane leadership, if your soul needs a spark to re-ignite itself, run -don't walk- to get this book.

Potomac Journey: Fairfax Stone to Tidewater
Published in Paperback by Smithsonian Institution Press (December, 1995)
Authors: Richard L. Stanton and Stewart L. Udall
Average review score:

A Magnificent Journey
I discovered this wonderful book while researching the Potomac for a graduate school project. Stanton (a former Executive Director of the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin) has captured both the river's history and its cultural essence in a concise, enjoyable work.

As a long-time resident of the Mid-Atlantic area, I thought I had a fine appreciation of the Potomac's many gifts. Through Richard Stanton's words I learned just how much more there is to behold. Read this and learn of a wonderful world gone by; dream the dream of a beautiful river which is again flourishing after human neglect.

The Prehistory of Colorado and Adjacent Areas
Published in Paperback by Univ of Utah Pr (Trd) (January, 1999)
Author: Tammy Stone
Average review score:

Research Tool
This book answers many questions on the pre-history of Colorado and the surrounding area. I have used it as a research tool, but it is also a simple read for hobbyists and people interested in paleoindian cultures. The section on paleoenvironmental periods and climactic conditions was interesting and not found in other similar resources. The illustrations of different types of lithic points, as well as maps were helpful in visualizing the text. The appendices of plants, animals and fish found in Colorado are interesting additions. The emigration routes of the prehistoric people and how they led to the historic Indian tribes that the first Europeans encoutered are clearly described. I would have liked more speculation on what life was like for the prehistoric people and more illustrations on items such as clothing and tools other than the points, i.e. pottery, the atlatl, bone tools and ornaments. Also helpful would have been a graph or timeline of the diifferent periods of occupation. However, illustrations/photos of these items can be found in other resources. Overall, this publication does cover the prehistory of the region very well.
